Website Conversion Rate Optimisation Playbook
You have traffic. But visitors aren't converting. That's costing you thousands monthly. Most businesses leave 50–70% of conversion value on the table because they never optimise. The businesses that do see 2–3x more conversions from same traffic.
Understand Your Visitor's Journey
Map how visitors actually use your site. Not how you think they do. Use analytics to find where people enter, what they visit, where they leave without converting.
Watch real visitors with session recordings (Hotjar, Clarity). See where they struggle. See where they pause. This reveals friction invisible in analytics.
Different visitors convert at different stages. Some immediately. Others need more information. Serve both with multiple entry points to conversion.
Call-to-Action Strategy
Visibility: Main CTA should be visible without scrolling. Use contrasting colour. Make it 44x44px minimum for mobile tapping. CTAs should be expected, not surprising.
Copy: "Submit" is weak. "Book Your Free Strategy Call" is strong. "Get Started" beats "Click Here". Tell people exactly what happens when they click.
Multiple CTAs: Put CTAs at top, middle, bottom. Different people convert at different points. Don't limit to one.
Sticky Mobile CTA: Keep a button visible while scrolling on mobile. Removes friction. Many mobile conversions come from sticky buttons.
Form Optimisation
Shorter = Better: 3-field forms have higher completion than 10-field forms. Collect only essentials. Get more info later.
Progressive Profiling: Ask different questions in different forms. Don't overload the first one. Users share more after they've already invested.
Mobile Optimisation: Full-width fields. Appropriate keyboard types (email field shows @, phone shows numeric). Avoid dropdowns where single-select works.
Autofill: Allow browsers to autofill. Use standard labels: "Email", "Phone Number", "Website". Non-standard labels prevent autofill.
Trust Signals and Social Proof
Testimonials: Specific beats generic. "Great service!" is weak. "They cut onboarding from 2 weeks to 2 days. —Sarah Chen, Ops Manager" is powerful. Include names and titles.
Case Studies: Problem→solution→result format. Show real work, real results. Highly credible for B2B.
Certifications: Display relevant awards, certifications, recognitions. Signals expertise.
Trust Badges: Security badges, payment logos, guarantees. Reduce purchase anxiety.
Recent Activity: Fresh blog posts, recent client work, new testimonials. Signal a live, active business.
Page-Specific Optimisation
Homepage: One job: send people where they need. Clear navigation. Show what you do, who you serve, next step.
Service Pages: Be specific. "We increase qualified leads for service firms through SEO" beats "digital marketing services". Explain what it does for the customer.
Pricing: Be transparent. Hidden pricing kills conversions. If pricing varies, explain factors. Comparisons increase conversion.
Contact Pages: Minimal distraction. Focus entirely on form and value proposition. Reassure about what happens after submission.
Testing and Iteration
Test your biggest conversion opportunities. Test button colour, CTA copy, form length, page layout. One thing at a time so you know what changed things.
Small improvements compound. 10% form improvement + 10% CTA improvement = 20% more conversions. That's the power of systematic optimisation.
Conversion optimisation isn't one-time. Competitors are optimising. Customer expectations change. Keep testing. Keep improving.
